Our supporter Saloni Thakkar is hosting a charity event on Friday 10th February and has themed it as Fire and Ice. Saloni tells why she has chosen to help us in this way.

Fire and Ice Charity Ball– 10th February 2017

Saloni ThakkarThe evening promises to be full of fun as it will start with welcome drinks at 7pm and carry through to 1am with lots of dancing - with music from The Vibrations Band, some fabulous auction prizes and amazing raffles.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2014. This came as a huge shock and my journey through numerous sessions of extremely strong chemotherapy, a mastectomy and radiotherapy began. I cannot describe the pain and fear of the unknown I felt during the chemotherapy days. The deep feeling of an uncertain future together with a roller coaster off treatments took over my life. I was in a complete daze through the treatments and would not have got through it and be as strong as I am now, had it not been for my incredible family and the support of my friends.

The feelings of anxiety and fear I went through as an adult were extremely painful. To think a young child goes through that and more, together with their families, is something that is unbearable to imagine. This is the reason why I picked Children with Cancer UK as my charity for this evening.

I was extremely touched and saddened by the story that started this charity and the fact that it is helping so many children and their families. I feel that Children with Cancer UK are not as well recognised as some of the bigger charities, hence I wanted to help in any way I could - to try to bring them to the forefront of people’s minds and help raise as much money as I can.  To help get one step closer to finding a cure for this unforgiving disease.

While I was going through my treatments, I had made up my mind that I wanted to do something to help cancer sufferers like myself. My sisters and friends immediately jumped at the chance to help put together this event and it would definitely not be a success had it not been for them. In spite of a very short time to sell tickets, we were sold out in two days. This was extremely encouraging and got everyone excited and fired up to make sure the event was a success.

I have had some extremely generous donations from Companies and individuals - namely Intuvigilance who were the first to make a very generous donation to the cause. There are quite a few companies and individual donors who wish to remain anonymous but I am extremely grateful for their support.

Various companies have donated their time and help to ensure the event goes well. Namely, Uniflora, Doves & Peacocks, Millets Printers, AV Projections Ltd without whom the evening will not be complete. Close friends have donated extremely generously for the Auction giving some amazing prizes and also an over whelming response for the raffle. In fact, we have had such a tremendous response, we have had to turn some gifts away or else we would be giving raffles away all night!

As the event draws close, it is getting very exciting. Everything has been sorted and now is the fun part of looking for a dress! The theme is Fire and Ice so I have made it a bit difficult for women to use their imagination as to what to wear!! It will be interesting to see the various colours of Fire and ice on the evening!
