On Saturday 11th May, Katrina Swinson took part in Just Walk, a 40km sponsored walk starting at Goodwood Racecourse and then over the South Downs.
Here is her account:
“An early morning start - 6.30am we arrive at Goodwood. The weather was chilly enough for jackets and lined trousers although some braved it in shorts.
My friend Pauline and I wondered why we had signed up for such an event! Just after a year of having our first child, were we mad?! However, we wanted to challenge ourselves, get fit, and do the walk for a worthy cause and so we chose Children with Cancer UK.
We had lots of support from family and friends to keep up our spirits and knowing that we were helping to save young lives made it even more worthwhile.
For the first part of our journey the sun shone brightly, there was some amazing scenery and areas of woodland showing a sea of bluebells.
We had lots of drinks and snacks on route as well as water stops, so we were never hungry. The route was mostly off road so tricky paths and some steep hills that became slippery when the spell of rain and hail came.
After the 30km mark our legs and feet began to feel the strain but with each other’s support, and remembering why we were taking part, we soldiered on with a sprint at the end, where we were welcomed with cheers of congratulations and a well-earned hot drink.
We would recommend this event to everyone as it had a great atmosphere and it got us out in to the great outdoors!”
