Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, the only dedicated paediatric hospital in South West England, opened in 2001.

About Bristol Royal Hospital

It is a national and international referral centre for children requiring bone marrow transplantation. In addition to providing the most up-to-date treatment facilities, one of the main aims in the design of the new hospital was to overcome many of the practical difficulties that face patients, families and staff. The provision of more single cubicles and single rooms and better facilities for parents to stay overnight with their child was an important consideration.

How we support the hospital

New cancer unit and MRI scanner In September 2013, we provided funding of £500,000 as part of the hospital’s Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal. Our gift will serve to transform facilities on the new Integrated Cancer Unit and will enable the hospital to invest in a ground-breaking Paediatric Intraoperative MRI scanner. £500,000 for MRI scanning facilities In 2002, we provided funding of £500,000 towards the installation of state-of-the-art, child-friendly MRI scanning facilities at the new hospital. An MRI scan enables doctors to monitor even subtle effects of a child’s treatment and make adjustments where necessary. The team at the hospital is pioneering the use of unmatched bone marrow transplants, improving the outlook for children for whom no matched donor is available. The scanning facilities are an important tool in the development and monitoring of this new technique.

Hospital expansion

In September 2013, we donated £500,000 to help children and their families at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, as part of their Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal. The expansion of Bristol Royal Hospital for Children will see the incorporation of new clinical specialities to create one of the only multi-disciplinary children’s hospitals in the UK, with a wide provision of clinical facilities all under one roof.

How the Children with Cancer UK donation will help

Our gift will serve to transform facilities on the new Integrated Cancer Unit and will enable the hospital to invest in a ground-breaking Paediatric Intraoperative MRI Scanner. The scanner – the first of its kind in the South of England and only the third in Europe – will revolutionise treatment and boost survival rates for children with brain tumours. The new, ground-breaking facilities will set Bristol Royal Hospital for Children apart from others in the UK and ensure that patients throughout the South can access the very best, world-class care, surgery and research.
