It is with great sadness that we share news of the sudden death of Professor Pat Buffler, a much valued friend and supporter of Children with Cancer UK.
Pat passed away on 26th September 2013 at the age of 75.
A leading authority on childhood cancerPat was one of the world’s leading authorities on the epidemiology of childhood leukaemia and other childhood cancers.
She was heading up several large research programmes related to childhood leukemia and other childhood cancers, including the California Childhood Leukemia Study.
Pat launched this study in 1995 to investigate the relationship between diet, genes, infections and environmental exposures and the development of leukaemia.
In 2006, Pat established the Childhood Leukemia International Consortium, a widely acclaimed international consortium for studies of childhood leukaemia. The Consortium now involves more than 30 investigators representing 22 epidemiologic studies of childhood leukaemia being conducted in 14 countries.
Pat served on the Scientific Advisory Panel of Children with Cancer UK from 2010 to 2013; her expertise and her friendship were greatly valued by us all and she will be very much missed.
