Hilton Hotels ‘Small Change Big Difference’ Campaign supports leading UK charity CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA

Hilton hotel guests will be making a big difference this winter to children suffering from leukaemia, as the Hilton in the Community Foundation announces the Small Change Big Difference campaign will benefit leading UK charity CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA.

The campaign invites Hilton guests to add an optional £1 onto their room bill during October, November and December 2007. Last year’s campaign was a huge success, raising over £200,000 for children’s hospices across the UK and Ireland.

CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to the conquest of childhood leukaemia through pioneering research, new treatment and support of leukaemic children and their families.

Money raised by the Small Change Big Difference campaign will be used to purchase vital equipment for the new childhood cancer and leukaemia centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Leukaemia, cancer of the blood, is the most common form of childhood cancer, affecting around 500 children a year in the UK. Little is currently known about what causes children to develop leukaemia - the number of new cases being diagnosed is increasing, suggesting that aspects of our changing lifestyle may play a role.

CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA funds research investigating why the incidence of childhood leukaemia is increasing so the charity can take informed, preventive action. An improved understanding of the causes of childhood leukaemia may also lead to improved treatments.

Trustee of CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA and TV star Linda Robson is heading up Hilton’s campaign this year alongside 3 year old Louisa Buttery, who was diagnosed with leukaemia aged just 3 weeks. Linda comments, “I am delighted that Hilton in the Community Foundation has selected CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA to benefit from this year’s Small Change, Big Difference campaign. The medical equipment will make a big difference to the care provided at Great Ormond Street Hospital, which treats children with the most serious cases of leukaemia from across the UK.”

Hugh Taylor, Chairman of the Hilton in the Community Foundation remarks: “The Trustees felt strongly that CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA should benefit from this year’s campaign because the disease can be so devastating to young children and their families. The medical equipment we hope to purchase thanks to the generous support of Hilton guests, will save lives and improve treatment”.

Hilton in the Community Foundation
Hilton in the Community Foundation was founded in 2001 as Hilton International's charity dedicated to supporting young people worldwide in the communities that Hilton serves. Focused on Education and Health, grants supporting disadvantaged young people are made in the UK and Ireland, while in the event of an international disaster, grants are made to relief organisations. The Foundation's core costs are funded by Hilton, so all donations go directly to good causes. Donations are funded almost entirely through the generous efforts and contributions of Hilton team members, family and friends and with the support of Hilton guests and company suppliers.

About ‘Small Change, Big Difference’
Thanks to the generosity of Hilton and Conrad hotel guests who opted to donate £1 on their guest bills during the run up to Christmas, the Small Change, Big Difference has raised £574,176 since 2004. Previous beneficiaries have been Barnado’s and Teenage Cancer Trust, which each received £100,000 in 2004 when the campaign launched, ChildLine which received £168,848 in 2005 and the Association of Children’s Hospices which received £195,830 in 2006, to be distributed equally between each of the UK’s 39 registered children’s hospice services.

In Ireland, the campaign has run since 2005, with €5,000 being raised for the ISPCC’s Childline service and in 2006, €9,202 was raised for The Children’s Sunshine Home in Dublin. In 2007, the funds raised will benefit Irish Autism Action, which provides a network of support and activities for children with autism and their siblings, parents and carers.
