Founded 34 years ago by Marion and Eddie O’Gorman as a promise to their son who died from leukaemia at the age of 14, we are now one of the biggest funders of childhood cancer research in the UK. Over the years, we have funded over 300 research projects which bring hope of kinder and more effective treatments for children and young people like Kodie, who was diagnosed with cancer when he was four years old. Whilst he was able to ring the end of treatment bell, not every child is so lucky. Tragically, two in 12 children diagnosed with cancer in the UK do not survive. That is why research is still so important. With your support, we can reach the day that every child like Kodie can survive.
Kodie was only four years old when it all happened.
One night he woke up crying, in pain and holding his left side. We booked in to see the doctor the very next morning but nothing could have prepared us for what was to come.
When the doctors took us to a room and gave us the devastating news that our little boy had a cancerous tumour, my world came crashing down. I cried so much. That was the one time I let it get to me. I needed to be strong for him and my family, so I picked myself up and discovered a strength that I didn’t even know I had.
A biopsy took place soon after to confirm what type of cancer he was facing and chemo had to start as soon as possible. Hearing it was a Wilms’ tumour was oddly a relief; we could put a name to it and it meant the doctors could determine the best treatment plan. We had to wait a few weeks for the chemo to help shrink Kodie’s tumour but then it was time for his operation to remove it along with his kidney. Every minute of his six and a half hour surgery felt like a lifetime.
Luckily Kodie recovered very quickly. After seven gruelling months of treatment, he was in remission. Our relief and joy was immeasurable! I’m so proud of how far Kodie has come over the years; he really is my little hero. We’re so grateful that research into cancer treatments means that children like our Kodie can survive cancer.
Simone, Kodie’s mum.
