A wonderful group, united by their love of fishing, has raised over £65,000 for Children with Cancer UK.
Anglers Against Cancer (AAC) are angling enthusiasts, committed to raising as much as they possibly can to help beat childhood cancer.
They started as a group of friends with a passion for both fishing and fundraising. AAC is now a family of nearly 5,000 anglers, their loved ones and their friends, with a shared goal of raising funds to help treat, and ultimately prevent, cancer in children.
Raffles, fancy dress, a sponsored cycle and more...
The anglers have been working tirelessly throughout 2015 to raise vital funds.
Their fundraising has included:
- Fancy dress - wearing silly outfits for donations!
- Car washing groups
- Sausage roll making
- Individuals holding their own small fishing matches
- Fishery owners, bait companies and tackle shops offering their lakes and products for auction at the main AAC event
- A shop selling Anglers Against Cancer merchandise: hoodies, towels, mugs and delicious homemade jams.
And a sponsored cycle: one angler, Darren Greenfield, cycled a tremendous 130 miles from Derby to Oxford. A huge achievement - especially considering he lost a leg in a motorbike accident 26 years ago.
Home of the Thirties Fishing Competition
The anglers were thrilled to surpasse their initial target, and everyone’s expectations, by raising over £65,000!The year’s fundraising culminated in the Home of the Thirties Fishing Competition. This is named after the size of the fish – 30 lbs! - that can often be found at the beautiful Orchid Lakes in Oxford.
Each angler purchased a ticket and had to raise a minimum of £150 to be in with a chance to win an all-inclusive fishing trip to France, courtesy of Crete’s Lakes, for biggest fundraiser.
An impressive team effort made it a fantastic weekend. The anglers were thrilled to surpasse their initial target, and everyone’s expectations, by raising over £65,000!
How the funds will be used to help children with cancer
The money raised by Anglers Against Cancer will be used to fund life-saving research into the causes and treatment of childhood cancer.
It will also help fund essential welfare events and raise much needed awareness.
