Around 4,000 children and young people develop cancer every year.

The bravery of these children and their families is phenomenal.

Whilst speaking to families we have found that there is always one beautiful golden moment that stands out during the tough times, and that’s what we are celebrating this month.

Debbie’s Golden Moment

For Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, I am sharing a memory that never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

When my little boy, Alex was just three years old he was diagnosed with leukaemia. They said Alex’s blood was like treacle and that he only had a five percent chance of survival. He had to be put straight into a medically induced coma. We prepared ourselves for the worst.

Thanks to new treatments made possible by research my little boy Alex woke up from his coma. But for the next two months he didn’t say a word.

Then one morning something wonderful happened. I remember my phone ringing, and expecting the worst. Instead I heard Alex say ‘I love you mummy’. The floodgates opened and I burst into tears.

I know this isn’t the end of Alex’s fight against cancer. But now the memory of my sweet little boy’s voice will help me get through whatever we face together. To our family little Alex is a miracle. But his story could have been so different. The incredible research of charities like Children with Cancer UK means more and more children like Alex beat cancer.

Alex was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was just three years old. His mum Debbie had noticed some bruising on Alex’s legs so they took him to their GP. The GP thought that Alex perhaps had anaemia. He recommended they visit A&E if the symptoms didn’t improve.
